In A Typical Ash Wednesday Church Service:
Definition for Lent:
Lent consists of forty days before Easter/Resurrection Sundy. The western Church skips over the Sundays when counting the days of Lent, because Sunday is always the joyful celebration of our Resurrected Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST! Therefore, the first day of Lent in the western Church is always a Wednesday.
Observers of Lent practice:
Psalm 51:10 KJV
The 40 days of Lent, stems from two biblical accounts.
Ash Wednesday, like the season of Lent, is not mentioned in Scripture and is not commanded by God. Christians are free to either observe or not observe it. It also should be clear that applying ashes, like other similar external practices, are meaningless, unless there is a corresponding faith in God, inner repentance and/or a committed heart to stop wrong behavior. God makes this clear in
Isaiah 58:6-7 NIV
6/ “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?
7/ Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Israelite children about 10 years old worked in the fields of the Egyptians, as their parents labored in the brick pits.
ON PALM SUNDAY
Palm fronds are distributed at some church services on this day.
APRIL 13TH, 2014 Traditionally, the ashes for the Ash Wednesday service come from burning the palm fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration.
Observance of Ash Wednesday like Lent provides a wonderful witnessing opportunity to others about the love Jesus has for us all; as well as for personel repentance and spiritual renewal not only for ourselves but for whoever or whatever we're praying for; such as to break bad habits, addictions, destructive thoughts and actions that we need the power of God to be delivered from; for ourselves and for loved ones and/or for our country, etc.; remembering that Jesus went to the cross and died to set us free from ungodly chains that bind us. When He resurrected from the dead, that same resurrection power was and still is today imparted to all who believe in God and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. Deliverance power is available to all who seek God for it.
Romans 8:9-11 NIV
9/ You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10/ But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11/ And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
2 Corinthians 4:7-18 NKJV
7/ But we have this treasure {spiritual power} in earthen vessels {in human bodies}, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8/ We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9/ persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10/ always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
Observance of Lent can be viewed as an outward expression of love for God, since partaking of Holy Communion/The Lord's Super, which Jesus said to do in remembrance of Him, is part of the observance. Lent is all about passionately remembering the good as well as the painfully bad times in the life of Jesus; learning the love of God in the fellowship of sacrifice and suffering with Him; as well as spending consecrated time with Him.

First, some dates to remember:
Putting ashes on one's body and dressing in sackcloth {an uncomfortable very rough material}, was an ancient practice of an outer manifestation of inner repentenance or mourning. The Bible mentions it several times in the Old Testament in:
In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of the practice of repentance in sackcloth & ashes, in:
20/ Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21/ “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22/ But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23/ And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24/ But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
NOTE: The Old Testament chosen children of God were Hebrews/Jews.
EXODUS 12:1 NKJV * ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
The New Testament followers of Jesus Christ/Christians, are the called & chosen children of God of all peoples and nations.
JOHN 15:16 NKJV * 16/ You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
REVELATION 7:9-10 NKJV * 9/ After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10/ and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Anyone fasting food during the season of lent should be aware that abstaining from all food can endanger your health. Each individual should pray and seek the Heavenly Father's will for the type of fast, if any at all, that He would personally have you engage in during this season. It is also advisable to consult with your doctor regarding fasting food for your specific body.
