Esau’s Family

1/ These are the family records of Esau (that is, Edom). 2/ Esau {Shem} took his wives from the Canaanite {Ham} women:

Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite {Ham},

Oholibamah daughter of Anah {Horite Chief and son of Zibeon the Hivite-Ham, Genesis 10:6-17} and granddaughter {Sam, LXX read Anah son} of Zibeon the Hivite {Hamitic Horite Chief-Genesis 10:6-17, Genesis 36:20},

Seir’s Family/Horite Priests {The word "Horite" takes many forms: Har, Harwa, Khar, Hur, Horonaim, Horoni, Horowitz, Horim, and Hori}

The Horites

(Hebrew: Hori, חרי),

were a people mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 14:6, 36:20, Deuteronomy 2:12) inhabiting areas around Mount Seir which was in Canaan (Gen. 36:2, 5). 

Habiru or Apiru (Egyptian: ˁpr.w) was the name given by various Sumerian, Egyptian, Akkadian, Hittite, Mitanni, and Ugaritic sources (dated, roughly, between 1800 BC and 1100 BC) to a group of people living as nomadic invaders in areas of the Fertile Crescent from Northeastern Mesopotamia and Iran to the borders of Egypt in Canaan. The Habiru are often identified as the early Hebrews.

Revealingly, Joseph {great grandson of Abraham, son of Jacob/Israel} is called a Hebrew (Genesis 39:14) who came from the land of the Hebrews (Genesis 40:15).

In the ancient world,

• all Israelites were Hebrews, but 
• not all Hebrews were Israelites. 
• All Hebrews were Habiru, but
• not all Habiru were of the stock of Jacob.

Horite priests served in the temple in Jerusalem on a rotating schedule.

I Chronicles 4:4 lists Hur (Hor) as the "father of Bethlehem". The author of Chronicles knew that Bethlehem was originally a Horite settlement in the heart of Horite territory. • Easton's Bible Dictionary - Seir means rough; hairy. 
• A Horite; one of the "dukes" of Edom ( Genesis 36:20-30).
• The name of a mountainous region occupied by the Edomites, extending along the eastern side of the Arabah from the south-eastern extremity of the Dead Sea to near the Akabah, or the eastern branch of the Red Sea. 
• It was originally occupied by the Horites (Genesis 14:6 ), who were afterwards driven out by the Edomites (Genesis 32:3; Genesis 33:14 Genesis 33:16). 
• It was allotted to the descendants of Esau (Deuteronomy 2:4 Deuteronomy 2:22; Joshua 24:4; 2 Chr 20:10; Isaiah 21:11; Exekiel 25:8).

Seir in Biblical Astronomy

{not astrology which is the “interpretation” of an assumed influence the stars (and planets) exert on human destiny. This is a false belief and the practice of astrology is sin against God. *See Deuteronomy 18:10-14*}

is the study of

"the Gospel in the Stars",

an examination of the constellations in Earth’s night sky to discern the hidden allegorical message within them, Seir refers to a star in the constellation Orion, considered to be a Messiah figure representing Christ. Astronomy is how the wise men from the east came to know that Messiah

 

had been born in Bethlehem!

22/ The sons of Lotan were Hori and Heman. Timna {Timna, a concubine of Esau’s son Eliphaz} was Lotan’s sister. 

23/ These are Shobal’s sons: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. 24/ These are Zibeon’s sons: Aiah and Anah. The Horites, were  known in the ancient world for their insistence that MANKIND SHOULD WORSHIP BUT ONE CREATOR.

According to Alice Lindsey @ jandyongenesis.blogspot.com "Who were the Horites?", "Abraham was a Horite Habiru/Hebrew whose territory extended between Hebron and Beersheba, and the entire land of Edom. The Horites of Edom were his kinsmen". 

 Alice Lindsey also states that the origins of Messianic expectation {looking for the coming of the Messiah which was fulfilled with the birth of Christ Jesus} can be traced to Abraham's ancient Kushite {Hamitic} Horite ancestors.

Genesis 36:20

Deuteronomy 2:12 (KJV) 12/ *The Horims {Horites NKJV} also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord gave unto them.)

The Horites have been identified with references in Egyptian inscriptions to Khar (formerly translated as Harri), which concern a southern region of Canaan. 
The first mention of the Horites in the Bible was when they were defeated by a coalition of Eastern kings led by Kedorlaomer of Elam (in modern Iran). 

These kings had come through Horite territory to subdue a rebellion by a coalition of other 'kings' of peoples whom they had ruled for twelve years, who were living near the Dead Sea and Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 14:1-12).

Later, according to Genesis 36, the Horites co-existed and inter-married with the family of Esau, grandson of Abraham through Isaac (Genesis 25:21-25). They were eventually brought under the rule of the descendants of Esau, also then known as Edom.

 Pre-Edomite Horite chiefs, descendants of Seir, are listed in Genesis 36:20-29 and 1 Chronicles 1:38-42.

One of these chiefs, Zibeon, is described as a Hivite {Ham}. {Genesis 36:2} Esau's wife Oholibamah was his granddaughter (Genesis 36:2, 24, 25). Their three sons all became 'chiefs,' although unlike other sons of Esau, they are not called chiefs "in Edom." (compare Gen. 36:16, 17 with 36:18). This may indicate a transition time in which only certain Horite areas were becoming known as Edom.

The chiefs who descended from Esau are listed in Gen 36:40-43. Two of these chiefs would appear to have been female - Timna and Oholibamah.
At some time, certain of these leaders rose to the level of 'kings' over the other chiefs, and the Horite land became known as Edom rather than the land of Seir. One example of these kings is Jobab, son of Zerah, a son of Esau and his wife Basemath, who was Ishmael's daughter (Genesis 36:35). Another is a ‘Temanite’, Husham (Genesis 36:34), a descendant of Esau's son, Teman        (Genesis 36:10,11).

None of these kings' sons became kings after their fathers died. Apparently, there was no familial royal line whereby sons of these post-Horite kings succeeded to the throne, but rather, some other system was in place. 
By the time governance of these peoples had been consolidated under kings instead of chiefs, Horites are no longer mentioned as such. The land of Seir had become known as Edom.

Chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41/ Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42/ Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43/ Magdiel, and Iram. These are Edom’s chiefs, according to their settlements in the land they possessed. Esau {Lit He Esau} was father of the Edomites.

PETRA IN THE KINGDOM OF EDOM

Petra in the Bible is called by its Hebrew name, Sela in Isaiah 16:1 and in 2 Kings 14:7.

Both Petra {Greek} and Sela {Hebrew} mean “rock. 

Much of the city is carved into sandstone cliffs. It lies in the heart of Mount Seir, halfway between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, in a valley surrounded on all sides by very steep rocky cliffs, with a few narrow gorges leading inside.

The earliest inhabitants of this area were the Horites.

 Later, Esau, the brother of Jacob, settled in the territory south of the Dead Sea, and his descendants, the Edomites, gradually replaced the Horites.

The Edomites lived here when Israel came from Egypt during the Exodus, about 1445 BC..

About 400 BC, the Edomites were driven out by the Arabian Nabataeans. 

Petra is located about fifty miles south of the Dead Sea and 170 miles southwest of modern Amman, Jordan.  It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage". It was named amongst the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2007 and was also chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the "28 Places to See Before You Die". 

 The Edomites, have been identified archaeologically, as a Semitic people. The oldest biblical traditions place Yahweh as the deity of southern Edom, and may have originated in "Edom/*Seir*/Teman/ Sinai"

before being established in Israel and Judah.

Deuteronomy 33:2 – 2/ “The LORD {Yahweh} came from Sinai and dawned over them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran.”

Judges 5:4, 5 – 4/“When you, Lord, went out from Seir, when you marched from the land of Edom, the earth shook, the heavens poured, the clouds poured down water. 5/ The mountains quaked before the Lord, the One of Sinai, before the Lord, the God of Israel.”

Habakkuk 3:3 – 3/ “God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran.”
