MAJOR AND MINOR
PROPHETS OF THE BIBLE
Christian and Jewish ScriptureA major prophet is a book in the Major Prophets section of the Christian Old Testament part of the Bible. The term "major prophet" is typically a Christian term as the Jewish Hebrew Bible does not group these books together and does not include the deuterocanonical/apocrypha Book of Baruch. The Protestant Christian Bible does not include Apocrypha either. The term "major" refers to the length of the book, not its importance. The major prophets in order of occurrence in the Protestant Christian Bible are:
Isaiah
18th CENTURY RUSSIAN ICON OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH
KIZHI MONASTERY, KARELIA, RUSSIA
THE BOOK OF ISAIAH HAS 66 CHAPTERS
- The Book of Isaiah is a book of the Bible, containing 66 chapters, traditionally attributed to the Prophet Isaiah, who lived in the second half of the 8th century BC.
Isaiah was part of the upper class but urged care of the downtrodden. At the end, he was loyal to King Hezekiah, but disagreed with the King's attempts to forge alliances with Egypt and Babylon in response to the Assyrian threat.
Isaiah prophesied during the reign of four kings: Uzziah (also known as Azariah), Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah [Isaiah 1:1 KJV]. That he is described as having ready access to the kings would suggest an aristocratic origin. According to tradition, he was martyred by being cut in two with a wooden saw, during the reign of Manasseh, who came to the throne in 687 BC. Of central importance in Isaiah are the prophecies in the first part of the book, especially chapters six to twelve, concerning the coming of the Messiah-King; and the prophecies at the end of the book, about the salvation of all creation in the suffering servant of the Lord. In the New Testament scriptures there are many quotations of the prophecy of Isaiah made in reference to John the Baptist, and most especially to Jesus Christ Himself, our precius Lord and Savior.[Isaiah 9:14 KJV *Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.* Matthew 1:21 thru 23 KJV * 21/ And she shall bring forth a son and shall call His name JESUS: for He shall save his people from their sins. 22/ Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23/ Behold, a virgin shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. In the book of Luke 4:18, 19 KJV, Jesus quoted the scripture found in Isaiah 61:1, 2 KJV. * [Luke 4:18, 19 KJV * 18/The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted; to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. 19/To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.*Isaiah 61:1, 2 KJV* 1/ The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2/ To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;]
In the first 39 chapters, Isaiah prophesies doom for a sinful Judah and for all the nations of the world that oppose God. [Isaiah 3:8, 9 KJV * 8/ For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: BECAUSE THEIR TONGUE AND THEIR DOINGS ARE AGAINST THE LORD, to provoke the eyes of His glory. 9/ The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and THEY DECLARE THEIR SIN AS SODOM, THEY HIDE IT NOT. WOE UNTO THEIR SOUL! FOR THEY HAVE REWARDED EVIL UNTO THEMSELVES.]
- The last 27 chapters prophesy the restoration of the nation of Israel. This second part of the book's two major sections also includes prophecies of a new creation in God's glorious future kingdom.
The 66 chapters of Isaiah consist primarily of prophecies of Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Syria, Israel (the northern kingdom), Ethiopia, Egypt, Arabia, and Phoenicia. The prophesies concerning them can be summarized as saying that God is the God of the whole earth, and that nations which think of themselves as secure in their own power might well be conquered by other nations, at God's command.
Jeremiah
ICON OF THE PROPHET JEREMIAH
THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH HAS 52 CHAPTERS
LAMENTATIONS
THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS HAS 5 CHAPTERS
Lamentations, also known as the Lamentations of Jeremiah (listed with the Ketuvim in the Tanakh/Tanach * sacred book of Judaism: the sacred book of Judaism consisting of the Torah, Prophets, and Hagiographa
According to Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions, authorship is assigned to the Prophet Jeremiah, who was ministering the Word of God during the conquest ofJerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, during which the First Temple was destroyed and King Zedekiah was taken prisoner (2 Kings chapters 24 & 25, Jeremiah 39:1 thru 10 and Jeremiah chapter52).
- Baruch (deuterocanonical; may be placed before Lamentations.) This work is not incorporated into the Hebrew Bible nor the Protestant Bible. Please click on and view the "About Us" page, located on the right hand side near the top of this page.
Ezekiel
18th CENTURY ICON OF THE PROPHET EZEKIEL
KIZHI MONASTERY, KARELIA, RUSSIA
THE BOOK OF EZEKIEL HAS 48 CHAPTERS
The first chapter of the Book of Ezekiel begins with Ezekiel's record of his vision of God's spectacular chariot. In this vision, God approaches Ezekiel as a divine warrior, riding in his battle chariot. This chariot appeared to be drawn by four living creatures each having four faces (of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle), and four wings. They could travel forward and backward without turning, and travel up and down without turning, and they moved in flashes of lightning. Beside each "living creature" was a beryl-colored wheel, constructed as "a wheel within a wheel," with "tall and awesome" rims that were full of eyes all around. In this appearance of God unto Ezekiel here, he commissions him to be a prophet and a "watchman" in Israel: "Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellous nation that hath rebelled against me:" (Ezekiel 2:3 KJV)
Nebuchadnezzar II destroys Jerusalem, when Ezekiel explained that the Jewish exile would come to an end and Israel would triumph.. The resurrection of the dead in Ezekiel chapter 37 KJV, speaks of God commanding Ezekiel to prophesy life to a valley full of dry dead bones that come to life as he is obedient to speak life to them. (please click on and review, #30 "A Case Not To Cremate" Weekly Bible Study) Ezekiel's Vision of Restoration (chapters 40 thru 48 KJV); Ezekiel explained that the temple and Jerusalem would be gloriously restored and the people of God would be gathered and blessed as never before. These would be Messianic times, and there would be the establishment and prosperity of the kingdom of God.
Daniel
ICON OF THE PROPHET DANIEL
THE BOOK OF DANIEL HAS 12 CHAPTERS
IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE A MAJOR PROPHETIC BOOK
Daniel was a child who was taken into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, after the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalam.
Nebuchadnezzar spoke to Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs [see #9 word definition above], that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, [Daniel being one of them] and of the king's seed, and of the princes, that were well favored and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge and understanding of science. Such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, to whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans [please see #11 word definition above, and read Daniel 1:3, 4 KJV]. They were to be nourished by the king for a period of three years, which afterwards they might be able to stand before him. [Daniel 1:5 KJV]
Daniel, along with Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, were the children of Judah, taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon.
Nebuchadnezzar's eunuch renamed Daniel - Belteshazzar, and renamed the other children as follows: Hananiah - Shadrach, Mishael - Meshack, & Azariah - Abed-nego.
Daniel requests that he and the other captive children of Judah, be granted the right not to eat the king's provision of meat and wine, but to be fed their sacred diet of pulse [see #10 word definition above] and water.* Please read Daniel 1:8 thru 16 KJV
God gave Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, & Azariah, knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom:
Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. [Daniel 1:17 KJV]
Daniel 1:20 KJV *And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them, 10 times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
Nebuchadnezzar dreams a troublng dream but can't remember what the dream is. He calls his magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and the Chaldeans to tell him what he dreamed and interpret the meaning of the dream. Nebuchadnezzar tells them if they can't make known to him what he dreamed and interpret it, then they shall be cut in pieces, and their houses made a dunghill. [please see word definition #13 above] The Chaldeans answeredthe king, and told him there is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter and that no other king, lord, or ruler had ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. Nebuchadnezzar was furious and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. That meant the children of Judah; Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah would be killed also. Upon hearing of the king's decree, Daniel went to see the king. He asked himto be allowed to show the dream and it's interpretation to the king.
Daniel went to his house and informed his companions of the kings matter and decree.
Daniel and the children of Judah prayed to the heavenly Father to reveal the dream and interpretation of it.Daniel prayed for mercy that he and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision and he blessed Godour Heavenly Father, bysaying, "Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are His": also Daniel stated, "He [God] reveals deep and secret things: He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.
Daniel gives praise and thanks to God.[Daniel 2:23 KJV * I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.]
Daniel gives God glory, and reveals the king's dream, and the interpretation of it, to the king [Daniel 2:27 thru 47 KJV].
Daniel 2:48, 49 KJV * 48/ Then king Nebuchadnezzarmade Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. 49/ Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon, but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
****************************************
Belshazzar, son of king Nebuchadnezzar, became king andmade a great feast. While drinking wine he commanded to bring golden and silver vessels which his father had taken out of the temple of the house of God,which was in Jerusalem. They drank wine out of the sanctified vessels while praising the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. Suddenly four fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote on the wall of the king's palace.KingBelshazzar was so troubled at the sight of the hand writing on the wall till he began to shake and his knees knocked against each other. He called for his astrologers, soothsayers, and the Chaldeans to interpret the writing and they could not. The queen spoke to kingBelshazzar about Daniel ---Daniel 5:11, 12 KJV * 11/ There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothers; 12/ Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, werefound in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
Belshazzar sent for Daniel and the following scripture quoted from the King James Version Bible tells us what happened
Daniel 5:16 thru 31 KJV
16/ And I [Belshazzar] have heard of thee [Daniel], that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed withscarlet and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom. 17/ Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation. 18/O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, glory, and honor: 19/ And for the majesty that he gave him, all peple, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down. 20/ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. 21/ And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will. (please review #10 Weekly Bible study, "7 Deadly sins") 22/ And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; 23/ But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, and thy wives, and thou concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified. 24/ Then was the part of the hand sent from him, and this writing was written. 25/ And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26/This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. 27/ TEKEL;Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. 28/ PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes [ancient Iranian people who lived in the northwestern portions of present day Iran] and Persians [ethnic group native to Iran]. 29/ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a gold chain about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. 30/ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. 31/ And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore [60] and two [62] years old.

- After the Persian conquest of Babylon, Daniel held the office of the first of the "three presidents" of the empire under the reign of Darius the Mede, and was at the head of state affairs, with the ability to influence the prospects of the captive Jews (Please read Daniel chapter6:1 thru 3KJV).
- Daniel's fidelity to God exposed him to persecution by jealous rivals within the king's administration. The fact that he had just interpreted the emperors' dream had resulted in his promotion and that of his companions.
- Being favored by the King, Cyrus the Great, Daniel was untouchable. Daniel's companions, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, were vulnerable to the accusation that had them thrown into the firey furnace for refusing to worship the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar's manmade gods; but they were miraculously saved [please review Daniel 3:14 thru 30 KJV], and Daniel would years later be cast into a den of lions (for continuing to practice his faith in God [YHWH or in English Jehovah]), but was miraculously delivered; after which the Persian King Cyrus, issued a decree enjoining reverence for "the God of Daniel" (see Daniel 6:4 thru27 KJV).
- Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian [Daniel 6:28 KJV]
