DISCERNINGING GOD SPEAKING TO US
Bible Study by Pastor Janice L Williams
JOHN 10:27-30 NKJV
27/ My sheep {humble/faithful/teachable persons} hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28/ And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29/ My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30/ I and My Father are one.”
JOHN 10:15, 16 NKJV
15/ As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16/ And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

scriptures in red are words spoken by JESUS
GENTLE & HUMBLE IN HEART
MATTHEW 11:29-30 NIV
29/ Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30/ For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
ISAIAH 56:8 NKJV
8/ The Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, says,
“Yet I will gather to him
others besides those who are gathered to him.”
GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!
Jeremiah 7:23, 24 NKJV
23/ But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’
24/ Yet
they did not obey or incline their ear,
but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.
Psalm 85:8 NKJV
8/ I will hear what God the Lord will speak,
For He will speak peace
To His people and to His saints;
But let them not turn back to folly.
When God speaks to us, what He says will always line up with the principles of the Bible. He will never speak against His WORD.
Matthew 24:35 KJV
1 Corinthians 14:33 NKJV
33/ For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
1 Corinthians 12:3 NKJV * 3/ Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
GOD OUR HEAVENLY FATHER SPEAKS TO ALL OF HIS CHILDREN. SOMETIMES WE'RE NOT AT THE PLACE WHERE WE'RE ABLE TO DISCERN IT IS OUR HEAVENLY FATHER SPEAKING TO US; AND YES, EVEN THROUGH US BY HIS HOLY SPIRIT.
WHEN WE COME TO GOD BY RECEIVING JESUS AS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, WE ALL HUNGER TO HEAR MORE AND MORE FROM GOD AND TO KNOW WITH ASSURANCE THAT IT IS IN FACT GOD SPEAKING TO US; ALSO TO CLEARLY KNOW WHAT HE IS TELLING US TO DO. GOD HAS GIVEN EACH ONE OF US A DIVINE ASSIGNMENT WITH SPIRITUAL GIFTS TO CARRY OUT THE CALL HE HAS PLACED ON OUR LIVES.
REVIEW WBS #17
MANY OF US, AT THE TIME WE RECEIVED SALVATION, DID NOT REALIZE WE WERE HEARING GOD CALLING US TO COME TO HIM THROUGH JESUS.
JOHN 14:6 NKJV
6/ Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
JESUS ALSO SPEAKS TO US IN JOHN 6:44 NKJV
44/ No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
AGAIN JESUS SPEAKS TO US IN JOHN 15:16, 17 NKJV
16/ You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17/ These things I command you, that you love one another.
WE WERE HEARING GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD WHEN WE MADE THE DECISION TO OBEY HIS COMMANDMENT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER, INCLUDING LOVING THOSE WE DON'T REALLY LIKE AND THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE AND EVEN HATE US.
MATTHEW 5:44 NKJV
44/ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
GOD SPEAKS TO US IN MANY WAYS; IN DREAMS, VISIONS & SOMETIMES THROUGH SITUATIONS AND PEOPLE, AS WELL AS THROUGH THE HOLY SCRIPTURES IN THE BIBLE.
OFTEN TIMES HE SPEAKS TO US IN A STILL SMALL VOICE IN OUR SPIRIT THAT IS NOT AN AUDIBLE VOICE OR A VOICE THAT CAN BE HEARD ON THE PHYSICAL PLANE. THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT GOD DOES NOT SPEAK TO US IN AN AUDIBLE VOICE. WHEN JESUS WAS BAPTIZED, GOD SPOKE FROM HEAVEN. GOD ALSO SPOKE FROM HEAVEN IN AN AUDIBLE VOICE THAT OTHERS STANDING BY JESUS HEARD. FATHER GOD SPOKE IN A LOUD AUDIBLE VOICE TO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, AS WELL AS TO BELIEVERS & OTHERS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
MATTHEW 3:16, 17, NKJV
16/ When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17/And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
JOHN 12:28-30 NKJV
28/ Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” 29/ Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30/ Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.
1/ Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2/ and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3/ As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4/ Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” 6/ So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 7/ And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 8/ Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9/ And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
10/ Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.”
And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”
11/ So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. 12/ And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.” 13/ Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14/ And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.” 15/ But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16/ For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” 17/ And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18/ Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.
22/ “These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23/ “So it was, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me [Moses], all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 24/ And you said: ‘Surely the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire.
We have seen this day that God speaks with man;
yet he still lives. 25/ Now therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore, then we shall die. 26/ For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27/ You [Moses] go near and hear all that the LORD our God may say, and tell us all that the LORD our God says to you, and we will hear and do it.’ 28/ “Then the LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. 29/ Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!
1 KINGS 19:11-13 NKJV
11/ Then He {GOD} said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12/and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13/ So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
BE SURE TO COME BACK FOR PRAYER IN JESUS NAME, TO ASK FATHER GOD TO MANIFEST THE SPIRITUAL GIFT OF DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS [1 CORINTHIANS 12:10]; FOR US TO ALWAYS DISCERN HIS PRESENCE AND KNOW WHEN HE IS SPEAKING TO US, AND WHEN HE IS NOT SPEAKING TO US.
WHERE GOD IS PRESENT, THERE IS INDESCRIBABLE JOY AS WELL AS A DEEP REVERENCE FOR HIM THAT THE BIBLE CALLS "THE FEAR OF THE LORD"
PRAYER FOR THE GIFT OF SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT OF FATHER GOD'S PRESENCE, AND TO RECOGNIZE WHEN HE IS SPEAKING TO US, AND WHEN HE IS NOT.
DEAR HEAVENLY FATHER, WE COME TO YOU IN JESUS NAME; FIRST OF ALL TO SAY THANK YOU, FOR THE HONOR AND PRIVILEDGE YOU HAVE BESTOWED UPON US TO COME TO YOU WITH OUR PETITIONS. WE PRAISE YOU FOR WHO YOU ARE. THERE IS NO ONE AND NOTHING THAT COULD EVER BE COMPAIRED TO YOUR GOODNESS AND YOUR GREATNESS. WONDERFUL, LOVING, MERCIFUL, COMPASSIONATE, ONLY TRUE GOD ALL BY YOURSELF, WE PRAISE YOU AND THANK YOU FOR LOVING US AND TEACHING US TO LOVE OTHERS.
FATHER GOD, WE HUNGER AND THIRST TO KNOW YOU BETTER. WE SEEK MORE SPIRITUAL INTIMACY WITH YOU. GRANT US I PRAY, THE SPIRITUAL GIFT OF DISCERNING OF SPIRITS, SPOKEN OF IN THE BIBLE, BOOK OF 1 CORINTHIANS 12:10, TO BE GREATLY MANIFESTED IN US, IN JESUS NAME AND FOR HIS SAKE. CAUSE US TO QUICKLY DISCERN YOUR PRESENCE AND TO CLEARLY HEAR AND KNOW WHEN YOU ARE SPEAKING TO US, IN OR THROUGH WHAT EVER WAY YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO. WE PRAY THAT YOUR SPIRIT OF HUMILITY BE MORE GREATLY INCREASED IN US; BECAUSE JESUS STATED HIS SHEEP KNOW HIS VOICE AND A STRANGER THEY WILL NOT FOLLOW. CAUSE US TO KNOW WHEN YOU ARE NOT SPEAKING TO US SO THAT WE WILL NOT BE DECEIVED BY SEDUCING SPIRITS THAT YOUR HOLY SCRIPTURES TELL US IN 1 TIMOTHY 4:1-2, HOW SOME WILL DEPART FROM THE FAITH AS A RESULT OF GIVING HEED OR LISTENING TO THEM.
YOUR HOLY WORD ALSO TELLS US IN
LET US NEVER FORSAKE YOUR MERCY BY LISTENING TO THINGS OR PEOPLE NOT OF YOU.
WE THANK YOU LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER FOR HEARING OUR PRAYER AND GRANTING THAT WHICH WE ASK OF YOU. IN JESUS NAME. AMEN
