Genesis 35:1-29
Jacob’s Return to Bethel & To His Father Isaac at Mamre
1/ Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.” {Genesis 28:10-22}
Remember
Genesis 28:10-22?
Jacob’s Vow at Bethel
10/ Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran.
11/ So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12/ Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13/ And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14/ Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15/ Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
16/ Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17/ And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”
18/ Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19/ And he called the name of that place Bethel; {Literally House of God} but the name of that city had been Luz previously. 20/ Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If
God will be with me, and keep me
in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on,
21/ so that I come back to my father’s house in peace,
then the Lord shall be my God.
22/ And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
2/ And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments. 3/ Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” 4/ So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.
5/ And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6/ So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7/ And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, {Literally God of the House of God} because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
8/ Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth.{Literally Terebinth of Weeping}
9/ Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him. 10/And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. 11/ Also God said to him: “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12/ The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.”
13/ Then God went up from him in the place where He talked with him. 14/ So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15/ And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.
Death of Rachel
16/ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17/ Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; you will have this son also.” 18/ And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; {Literally Son of My Sorrow} but his father called him Benjamin. {Literally Son of the Right Hand} 19/ So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20/ And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
21/ Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
Most of the information below obtained from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Migdal Eder, literally, "Tower of Eder" in Hebrew
is a tower mentioned in the biblical book of Genesis 35:21, in the context of the death of Jacob's wife, Rachel. The biblical record locates it near the present-day city of Bethlehem.
Connection to the Birth of the Jew's first, and later to all people's, Messiah/JESUS
Scholars interpret
Micah 4:8 as a prophecy
indicating that the Messiah would be revealed from the "tower of the flock" (Migdal Eder) which is connected with the town of Bethlehem, southeast of Jerusalem.
Micah 4:8 {KJV}
8/ And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
Micah 5:2-5 {KJV}
2/ But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
3/ Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
4/ And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
5/ And this man shall be
the peace,
when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the city of David
{Luke 2:11 11/"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."}
{Luke 2:4 4/"And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)}
quite possibly in the Tower of the flocks, when there was no room for Him at the Inn; all of the flocks found in the area surrounding Jerusalem “as far as Migdal Eder” were deemed to be holy and consecrated and could only be used for sacrifices in the Temple, in particular for the
peace and Passover sacrifices.
This area was a special,
consecrated circle
around the city of Jerusalem.
This means the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem who first heard the Good News from the angels were not ordinary shepherds but served the sacrificial system of the Temple. These men served the Mosaic covenant, a foreshadowing of the new covenant. And these men were now confronted with the reality of the eternal light to which their ministry had been pointing to for centuries. It was declaring a new era of salvation!

22/ And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah {his half brothers Dan & Naphtali's mother} his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.
Jacob’s Twelve Sons
Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
23/ the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
24/ the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;
25/ the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali;
26/ and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher.
These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.
Death of Isaac
27/ Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre,
or Kirjath Arba { Literally Town of Arba} (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.
28/ Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29/ So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
