Genesis 38:1-30 NKJV

Judah and Tamar

1/ It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah.

Adullam (Adullam, Odullom, Eglon) is a district in central Israel between Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip to the west and north-west of Hebron mountains. It was one of the royal cities of the Canaanites referred to in the Hebrew Bible. It was a fortified city in the land of Canaan, which served as the capital of the Canaanite kings. 

The city was captured by Joshua during the capture of Canaan and added to possession of the tribe of Judah.

2/ And Judah {Shem} saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite {Ham} whose name was Shua, and he married her and went in to her.

ABRAHAM CHOSEN BY GOD TO BE THE FATHER OF MANY NATIONS, WORSHIPPED THE ONE TRUE GOD!

THE CANAANITES WORSHIPED MANY gods or idols, some of them required human sacrifice.

All idol worship is Satanically based. God once detroyed the world because of idol worship!

3/ So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. 4/ She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. 5/ And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

Chezib is today Chezib (Aczib). It is about ten miles Northwest of Hebron. 

6/ Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7/ But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord killed him.

8/And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife {Tamar} and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”

4/ they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. 5/ Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned.

 I PONDER WHY THE MAN IN THE ACT OF ADULTRY WITH THE WOMAN IS NOT MENTIONED, OR BEING SHAMED, PERSECUTED AND BROUGHT FORTH TO STONE TO DEATH, AS WELL AS THE WOMAN???

 

ADULTERY, RAPE & CHEATER LAWS

 

Deuteronomy 22:22-27 NKJV

22/ “If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel. 23/ “If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, 24/ then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you. 25/ “But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26/ But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. 27/ For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her. 

WITH THE LAWS OF MOSES AMONG THE HEBREW ISRAELITES/JEWS, IN FULL FORCE AT THE TIME OF JESUS, I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE WHAT JOSEPH WENT THROUGH WHEN HE FOUND OUT MARY WAS PREGNANT WITH JESUS, AND SHE TOLD HIM NO MAN HAD TOUCHED HER!

 But what do You say?” 6/ This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

7/ So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8/ And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9/ Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10/ When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
11/ She said, “No one, Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

ALTHOUGH WE STILL HAVE A LONG, LONG WAY TO GO, 



 BUT WE'VE ALL COME A LONG, LONG, LONG WAY BABY! 





9/ But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10/ And the thing which he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also.

11/ Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house till my son Shelah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die like his brothers.” And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

12/ Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah’s wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13/ And it was told Tamar, saying, “Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14/ So she took off her widow’s garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah;

for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.

15/ When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face. 16/ Then he turned to her by the way, and said, “Please let me come in to you”; for

he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law.

So she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
17/ And he said, “I will send a young goat from the flock.”
So she said, “Will you give me a pledge till you send it?”
18/ Then he said, “What pledge shall I give you?”
So she said, “Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” 

• Signet *a small seal, especially one set in a ring, used instead of or with a signature to give authentication to an official document or pledge.
• The design of a signet is personalized for its owner, and no two are alike. The ancients used signets to mark their possessions and to sign contracts.

These three items signet, cord, and staff:

 The signet was a cylindrical seal that bore the owner’s name or symbol and was worn on a cord around his neck so that it could be seen by others and used to stamp his signature.

The staff {walking stick}, or shepherd's staff: A shepherd’s staff could also be used as a walking stick, though it performs a more useful function of helping the shepherd navigate uneven terrain while taking care of cattle. Besides this, the curved horn of the staff enables the shepherd to catch a goat or sheep that is straying from the herd and also to direct the herd to a particular path.



Judah's staff would have identified him with some sort of custom insignia which were unique to Judah.

Tamar wanted to prove that Judah was the father of her child/children should he impregnate her; also to prove that she did not commit adultery, but had conducted herself through the rules of ancient Levirate marriage. 

• Levirate marriage [From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia], a type of marriage in which the brother of a deceased man is obliged to marry his brother's widow, and the widow is obliged to marry her deceased husband's brother.
  Levirate marriage has been practiced by societies with a strong clan structure in which exogamous marriage (i.e. marriage outside the clan) was forbidden. It has been known in many societies around the world. The practice is similar to widow inheritance, where, for example, the deceased husband's kin can dictate whom the widow may marry. The practice was extremely important in ancient times (e.g., Ancient Near East), and remains so today in some parts of the world. Having children enables the inheritance of land, which offers security and status.
  A levirate marriage might only occur if a man died childless, in order to continue his family line.
•  In Judaism, a levirate marriage (Hebrew: yibbum) is mandated by Deuteronomy 25:5-10 of the Hebrew Bible, which obliges the oldest surviving brother of a man who dies childless to marry the widow of his childless deceased brother, with the firstborn child being treated as that of the deceased brother (see Genesis 38:8 above) which renders the child the heir of the deceased brother, and not the genetic father.

Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

19/ So she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20/ And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. 21/ Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?”
And they said, “There was no harlot in this place.”
22/ So he returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place.”
23/ Then Judah said, “Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.”
24/ And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore she is with child by harlotry.”
So Judah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned!”

"It is from the Horite priesthood that the priesthood of Israel developed. Moses' two brothers, Korah and Aaron, were Horite priests before Judaism emerged as a distinct world religion, even before Israel can be identified as a nation.

"When Abraham went to the land of Canaan he did not abandon the tradition of his {Kushite Afro-Asiatic} ancestors. He continued the marriage pattern of his Horite people, believing the promise made to them in Eden that the Seed of the Woman would be born of their bloodlines. That is why Abraham married his half-sister (Sarah) and his patrilineal cousin (Keturah), following the pattern of his ruler-priest ancestors. The Horites anticipated the coming of the Son of God to earth and believed that He would be born of their priestly bloodlines. That is why the lines of priests intermarrried exclusively and why unchaste daughters of priests were burned alive (Lev. 21:9).                                                                                 Sexual impurity was not tolerated.

Tamar most likely was the daughter of a Horite Priest. 

Much later on in scripture we find the ways of the Horite Priests still being carried on in Jerusalem.

The author of Chronicles knew that Bethlehem was originally a Horite settlement in the heart of Horite territory."

 Leviticus 21:9 NLT * 9/ "If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she also defiles her father’s holiness, and she must be burned to death. 

25/ When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.”

And she said, “Please determine whose these are—the signet and cord, and staff.”

 26/ So Judah acknowledged them and said, “She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.”

And he never knew her again.

27/ Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb.

28/ And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” 29/ Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, “How did you break through? This breach be upon you!” Therefore his name was called Perez {Pharez KJV}. {Literally Breach or Breakthrough}. 30/ Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah {Zarah KJV}.

THE "DESPERATE TO SURVIVE", ACTIONS OF TAMAR, ASSURED HERSELF AND HER SONS A PERPETUAL PLACE IN THE HEBREW ISRAELITE CHOSEN CHILDREN OF GOD, FAMILY OF ABRAHAM.

ALTHOUGH TAMAR ACTED IN A DEVIOUS MANNER BY TODAY'S STANDARDS OF MORALITY, SHE WAS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LEVIRATE LAWS OF HER TIME.
PEREZ {PHAREZ KJV}, TAMAR'S FIRST BORN SON {AS LATER GENELOGIES PROVE: {RUTH 4:12, MATTHEW 1:3}}, WAS TO BE THE SON OF JUDAH WHO WOULD CARRY ON THE MESSIANIC LINE UNTIL THE TIME OF DAVID, AND ULTIMATELY OF JESUS. 

Today the covenant of God's blessings that were originally only for Abraham’s Hebrew Israelite physical descendants, have been extended to all of the followers of:

JESUS CHRIST   THE GREAT I AM!
